Stephen Thomas "Tommy" Shiflett, 49, died suddenly Thursday, October 24, 2002, in Los Angeles, California. Tommy grew up in Richmond and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School where he excelled in football, track, and basketball. Receiving a full football scholarship to the University of Richmond, he was a three year starter at offensive guard, helping to lead the team to an AP top twenty ranking and to the Tangerine Bowl in 1973. Tommy graduated with a BA in History in 1974. Pursuing his love of sports and working with young people, Tommy embarked on a teaching and coaching career at Buckingham County High School and later went on to work with students at Lee Davis High School and Thomas Jefferson High School. After leaving teaching, Tommy worked in various capacities with schools in this area until his move to California. There he entered the construction trade, later going on to become president of PAG Construction, Inc. with his beloved friend and partner, Alan Hoffman. There he also met and married Diana Randall and started his family. Tommy never abandoned his love of sports, running marathons and guiding his own children and many others as a coach and mentor in swimming, soccer, football, and basketball. A modest man, who talked little of his own accomplishments, he was State and Junior Olympic backstroke record holder in 1965, All Capitol District fullback linebacker at Thomas Jefferson, and Honorable Mention All Southern Conference in football at University of Richmond. Above all Tommy and his wife, Diana, were devoted to their beloved children and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, local architect W. Charles Shiflett. He is survived by his mother, Jayne T. Shiflett of Powhatan; his wife, Diana; and daughters, Nicole, Brett, and Kylie; son, Dylan, all of California; brothers, Charlie Shiflett and wife, Gwen, Rolfe Shiflett and wife, Julie, all of Powhatan, Ronald Shiflett and wife, Marya of Newport Beach, California; sisters, Grace Myers, Frances Seaton and husband, Chris of Richmond, and Becky Shiflett of Boone, North Carolina; former wife, Deborah Johnston of Richmond; four nephews and eight nieces. Tommy's family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, where services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. Interment following the service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.
