I had every intention of being together with everyone this weekend. BUT it will, alas, not happen. I have a client who is leaving for 3 months and needs to see me at their home in Tidewater over the weekend. In this economic environment I simply have to be available.I just found out about this yesterday evening. If I can possibly join y'all on Sunday, I will.

Have a blast. Celebrate for me and with a litle luck,we'll all be together on our 50th.

Hey, Fellow Classmates,

I wish I could be with everyone for the reunion, but just discovered the webpage and had plans already in the works.  Now that I am registered, perhaps we can have a 45th.....! I have to say I'm curious as to who knew my last name is now Pugh?!!

Life is good -- great husband, great family, grandkids and breathing!!!!

Have fun!

What can I say about my fabulous Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1970 40th Reunion??? Fabulous, delightful, funny, hilarious, humorous, happy, exciting, stimulating, charming, surprising, exhausting, and just the very best ever. My heart is filled with memories of then and now.  It was so sweet seeing so many classmates enjoying time together.   Thanks to all that attended.  Michael Grossman thanks for making me laugh so so much.

I would just like to say thank you to Michael Grossman and everyone else on the Reunion Committee who worked so hard to organize the weekend festivities and this fantastic website.  Although, I was only able to make it to the Saturday night party, which I really enjoyed, I heard from others that the TJ tour and boxed lunch was a lot of fun.  I have been amazed over the past few months at the enthusiastic response on this website by so many of our classmates, even if they were unable to make it to the reunion.  Michael, you did an amazing job and deserve all of the praise that you have been receiving.  I am sure it was not an easy task, but what a successful end result it was!  Hopefully, we can locate even more of our "lost" classmates by the time the next reunion rolls around.  Great job, everyone!!!

I just want to take this opportunity to thank the "Reunion committee" for such a wonderful week-end! It was more fun and exciting than I could have imagined. The whole thing brought back such fun memories and has left us with many new memories.

I'll be looking forward to the next one!

Thank you all again for everything, Faye (Schultz) Ashby

Many, many thanks to the entire Reunion Committee for making our 40th Reunion the very best ever!!  I would also like to thank all who attended for being so friendly and filled with precious high school memories from back in the day!!  Everyone looked so nice on Saturday night and seemed to really be enjoying each other's company and dancing the night away!!  It could not have been nicer!!  Now I can't wait for the 50th Reunion!!  Let's track down the rest of those missing classmates so we can have even more classmates enjoy the festivities!!  Best wishes to all classmates---especially to those who traveled long distances to be with us----Celeste Armstrong from Honolulu, Hawaii; Wilson Valentine from Juneau, Alaska; Diane Richards from Butte, Montana; Donna Rice and Anne Sutton from Atlanta; Liz Lawrence from Kentucky; and Patsy Barry from Detroit, Michigan!!  What a FANTASTIC turnout we had!!!  Let's have a 45th Reunion!!!  I'm ready!!!!!!!!!!!  : )

I have uploaded a great number of photos of the reunion weekend here and on Facebook.  Please feel free to comment, tag, correct any tags or names, or download any photos for your own use.  I trust that I have not taken up too much memory on the site.  It was a great weekend, thank you all for participating and especially to Michael and the committee for making this such a grand weekend full of new memories and making the trip so worthwhile.

I wanted to take a moment to say thanks to you, the TJ Class of 1970, for your participation and generosity.  Your kind feedback has indicated that the reunion was a great success, and your support has also enabled us to commit to a donation to the school (details to follow).

Your participation has also provided the means to maintaining this website.  I trust we all enjoyed the site, and keeping it alive and well will facilitate ongoing communication amongst us all.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with the reunion committee over the last year, and it was so satisfying to be a small part of such a great weekend.  Thank you Duffy, Michael, Susan, Randi, Cathy, Beth, Jim, Arthur, Gale, and Mr. Flammia (Russ) - What a pleasure!

Best regards,

Shelly Nordin, Reunion Treasurer

Hey, Everyone! I just wanted to say that this reunion was a BLAST!!!! I had such a good time...and it was sooooo good to see everyone! Not enough time to catch up with all...but I THINK I talked to just about everyone! Let's put it this way...my feet were killing me...I didn't sit down all night; my butt hurts...from all the dancing; and..I was so hoarse from ALL the talking that I could hardly speak the next day!!!

Our class was really unique if you think about it! 1970...look at all that had happened and was happening!!! We were the the class to take a stand...remember Randy Sager and her famous pants!!!??? We wanted and GOT answers!!!

Thanks to the reunion committee...not enough words to thank you all for the hard work! You did it...you got us all together...and you gave us all some wonderful memories! AND the spirit to get together again in 10 years for the 50th reunion!!!!!

Paula

Sorry I am so slow in expressing my gratitude to everyone on the reunion committee for a job superbly done.  I had a great time.  Seeing so many people in one place that I have not seen for 30 or 40 years was overwhelming spectacular!   Great seeing all of you and hopefully it will not be another 10 years before I see you again.

This was sent to us by Malcolm Howard (Class of 1971):

Stephen Thomas "Tommy" Shiflett, 49, died suddenly Thursday, October 24, 2002, in Los Angeles, California. Tommy grew up in Richmond and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School where he excelled in football, track, and basketball. Receiving a full football scholarship to the University of Richmond, he was a three year starter at offensive guard, helping to lead the team to an AP top twenty ranking and to the Tangerine Bowl in 1973. Tommy graduated with a BA in History in 1974. Pursuing his love of sports and working with young people, Tommy embarked on a teaching and coaching career at Buckingham County High School and later went on to work with students at Lee Davis High School and Thomas Jefferson High School. After leaving teaching, Tommy worked in various capacities with schools in this area until his move to California. There he entered the construction trade, later going on to become president of PAG Construction, Inc. with his beloved friend and partner, Alan Hoffman. There he also met and married Diana Randall and started his family. Tommy never abandoned his love of sports, running marathons and guiding his own children and many others as a coach and mentor in swimming, soccer, football, and basketball. A modest man, who talked little of his own accomplishments, he was State and Junior Olympic backstroke record holder in 1965, All Capitol District fullback linebacker at Thomas Jefferson, and Honorable Mention All Southern Conference in football at University of Richmond. Above all Tommy and his wife, Diana, were devoted to their beloved children and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, local architect W. Charles Shiflett. He is survived by his mother, Jayne T. Shiflett of Powhatan; his wife, Diana; and daughters, Nicole, Brett, and Kylie; son, Dylan, all of California; brothers, Charlie Shiflett and wife, Gwen, Rolfe Shiflett and wife, Julie, all of Powhatan, Ronald Shiflett and wife, Marya of Newport Beach, California; sisters, Grace Myers, Frances Seaton and husband, Chris of Richmond, and Becky Shiflett of Boone, North Carolina; former wife, Deborah Johnston of Richmond; four nephews and eight nieces. Tommy's family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, where services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. Interment following the service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.

If you follow the link below you will read a very interesting story about a classmate, Dave Hazlett, that somehow got lost in cyberspace. Harold Wilkerson attempted to post the article around the time of our reunion and where it ended up is anybody's guess. Thanks to Dave and Harold for contacting me and giving the story a second chance to viewed by the rest of us. I will also post the link on the website because for some reason, also unknown to me, there are classmates registered on the site who don't receive these mass e-mails. If your e-mail address has changed, please let us know.

I was wondering what happened to my buddy Dave.   We hung out and had  some good times.   I remember well him saying, while we watched Bruce perform on the parking deck downtown, that guy is going to be very famous some day.    Just wait and see!

Well Hazy Davy, you were right hundred times over.   Glad to hear you are still into music.   Take care my friend.

BUFORD, Robert Strother, of Richmond and Gloucester Banks, Virginia, died on February 2, 2012. He was born on May 2, 1923, the third son of Elizabeth Lanier Dunn and Algernon Sidney Buford Jr., of Richmond. Bobby graduated from St. Christopher's School and attended Virginia Military Institute until he was called to active duty in World War II. He married the former Mary Butler Pollard "Polly" prior to departing overseas. Attempting to return to VMI following the war, he was informed he would be required to live in barracks even though he was newly married with a young son. Bobby declined that kind offer and elected to continue his education with Polly by his side at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Polly and Bobby settled in The Fan District in Richmond, living on West Avenue for 34 years and raising four children. Bobby began his career as a civil engineer working for the C&O Railroad and then joined Baskerville and Sons before becoming a partner with Torrence Dreelin Farthing & Buford (TDF&B). He retired form TDF&B in 1985. Bobby and Polly moved to Lexington, Virginia, for 11 years, returning to Richmond in 1996, where they lived at The Hermitage at Cedarfield. Polly predeceased him (in 1997), as did his brothers, A. Sidney Buford III and Lanier D. Buford. Bobby married the former Jane Guthrie Valentine. Bobby and Jane enjoyed living at Cedarfield and visiting their second home at Mattawan in Hanover County for 14 years. Bobby was proud of his service as Mayor of West Avenue and President of The Gloucester Banks Association, as well as his other professional, civic and personal achievements. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his daughter, Molly P. Buford (Jamie Dickerson, deceased); sons, A. Sidney Buford, Lewis B. Buford and wife, Sandy, and Robert S. Buford Jr. "Rob" and wife, Barbara Iason. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christoper Buford, Lucy and Rob Ricca, Will Buford, Lindsay and Mark Wheeler and Emily Buford and fiance David Levesque; and one great-grandchild, Kevin Ricca. He is also survived by his long-time friend, Russell Jones and wife, Lizabeth, and their son, William. In addition, he is survived by two stepchildren, Beth Conley and Wilson Valentine and spouses; and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 6, at St. James's Episcopal Church, followed by interment in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice .

First and foremost, Robert "Bobby" Buford was Sidney Buford's father; Sidney was a member of our class too.
